Role in Project: Art Lead and Hardware Development.
Pizza Pop was created with the goal of bringing a large scale arcade experience to the FUSE exhibition show. The project theme and pitch was developed by a separate student group, and I was brought on as the art lead. Specifically they were looking for an upperclassman with project experience, art ability, and a willingness to experiment with as of then non-existent hardware.
The original plan was to work with a local arcade machine company to source a professionally made cabinet & hardware. However, our budget was slashed and the project was nearly scuttled. Instead it was proposed that we recycle the materials from the previous year's catapult from Cattlepult to build our own cabinet. From there we would either purchase our build our own light guns.
The game itself took advantage of the 1st & 2nd level year animation students to create simple 2D assets. Pizza ingredients would be fired at a flying pizzas. The programming and design team worked on the mechanics. The art team worked on asset development and animations - with me taking on the hardware conundrum solo. In addition to handling digital art assets, I worked heavily with recording the sound design and finding our music score.
The game was a hit on the day of FUSE. Our biggest concern was the structural integrity of the hardware in the face of an army of kids ages 6+. Everything held up better than expected, and the day proceeded with only one small - albeit intended hiccup.
During the course of development, the philosophical argument over the validity of pizza ingredients came up. On the day of FUSE, we released a very specific and specially created version of our game where all the ingredients were replaced with a specific and controversial topping choice. We presented our specialty Pizza Pop to the FUSE director 10 minutes before the gallery show went live, to help break the tension of what would be a long and stressful day.
